Korean Language Programs in South Korea | Universities, Price, Application

One of the easiest ways to move to Korea is to apply for a Korean Language Program in Korean universities. The visa for Korean Language program is D-4, and it is given to those who got admission for Korean language program in one of the universities. Although the majority of people desiring to come to Korea are aware of this information, most of them have difficulties in finding out which university they should apply for, which documents they need to prepare, how much money it costs and how the whole procedure of getting admission for a Korean language program flows. This article is going to make a recommendation of three universities you can consider for your language course as well as explain in detail everything you need to do to apply. Please note that there are quite a lot of great universities in Korea offering Korean language courses, and this article does not list the best ones. Rather, the universities listed in this article are highly recommended based on personal experience of students who studied in them.

 


1. Korea University – Korean Language Program.

Korea University offers full Korean language course including 6 levels based on Korean language proficiency level. The program lasts for four semesters – spring, summer, fall and winter. For each semester you apply separately. The exact application dates and deadlines differ from year to year, and can be checked on the official website of Korea University Korean Language Program. Usually, the deadlines for application are in January, April, July and October for each semester, respectively. Each semester lasts for 2,5 months or 10 weeks. Overall, the program is divided into two courses: General Korean Course and Academic Korean Course. Both programs are for overseas Koreans as well as foreigners who already got al least high school diploma, however, Academic Korean Course is needed for those who wish to apply for admission to a university in Korea.

 

Payment:

Tuition fee includes the admission fee of 120,000 KRW (approximately $90) and the course fee of 1,800,000 KRW per semester (approximately $1,350).

 

Required Documents:

Documents required to submit are the application form which can be downloaded from the KUKLC website and should be filled in, printed and signed, admission fee receipt, 3.5cm*4.5cm sized color ID photo, copy of passport, proof of latest academic background, bank statement of minimum 10,000,000 (approximately $7,500) in balance, for certain countries only proof of financial support.

 

Application Process:

The whole procedure includes 6 steps. First, you should submit the required documents by post or in person. If you are not in Korea, obviously, you will need to go to the post office to send the documents. Second, after the results are announced, you have to transfer the admission and the course fee. Third, KLC will send you the letter of admission. Fourth, you prepare the documents needed for visa application. Fifth, you need to apply for visa in Korean Consulate General or Korean Embassy in your country and finally, receive your visa.

 

Dormitory:

Korea University also provides dormitory which requires separate application. The fee is 1,200,000 KRW (approximately $900) for 1 term.

2. Soongsil University – Korean Language Program.

Soongsil University offers full Korean language course including 6 levels based on Korean language proficiency level. The program lasts for four semesters – spring, summer, fall and winter. For each semester you apply separately. The exact application dates and deadlines differ from year to year, and can be checked on the official website of Korea University Korean Language Program. Usually, the deadlines for application are in January, April, July and October for each semester, respectively. Each semester lasts for 2,5 months or 10 weeks. There are morning classes (level 3 – 6) and afternoon classes (level 1 – 2), and there are 15 students in each class.

 

Payment:

Tuition fee includes the admission fee of 60,000 KRW (approximately $45) and the course fee of 1,450,000 KRW per semester (approximately $1,085).

 

Required Documents:

Application form, 3 passport photos with white background, a copy of passport, applicant’s or parent’s bank balance statement above $9,000, graduation certificate and academic transcript, certificate of family relations, parent’s proof of employment and income certificate, copy of parent’s ID.

 

Application Process:

First you submit the documents through post office of in person. Next, after document assessment you get a notification of admission and pay the fees. Finally, after getting the entry permit by Soongsil university, you apply for visa a take a placement test to identify you level.

 

Dormitory:

Soongsil university offers two types of dormitory: Soongsil Residence Hall and Global Brain Hall. The prices per 12 weeks are: Soongsil Residence Hall twin room – 961,200 KRW (approximately $720), Global Brain Hall twin room – 529,750 KRW (approximately $395), Global Brain Hall quadruple room – 436,200 KRW (approximately $325).

3. Sejong University – Korean Language Program.

Sejong University offers full Korean language course including 6 levels based on Korean language proficiency level. The program lasts for four semesters – spring, summer, fall and winter. For each semester you apply separately. The exact application dates and deadlines differ from year to year, and can be checked on the official website of Korea University Korean Language Program. Usually, the deadlines for application are in January, April, July and October for each semester, respectively. Each semester lasts for 2,5 months or 10 weeks. There are morning classes and afternoon classes, and there are 10-15 students in each class.

 

Payment:

The tuition fee of language course in Sejong university is 1,600,000 KRW (approximately $1,200). Registration fee is 100,000 KRW (approximately $75).

 

Required Documents:

Unlike the previous two universities, the application form in Sejong university is filled in online. Other documents include 1 photo and a passport copy, an original copy of the latest diploma with notarization of transcript, an original certificate of balance issued from a bank (at least $10,000), the parent’s income certificate and a proof of employment.

 

Dormitory:

Sejong University provides quadruple rooms for students and the price per 10 weeks is 600,000 KRW (approximately $450). If you want to get a room in a dormitory, you should apply as soon as possible because rooms are assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis.
